The ideas shared below are not extensive nor complete. I do hope they will give you a good jumpstart towards implementing a self care plan into your daily routine.

Simple Acts of Self Care to Refresh Your Life

One of the best things you can do for yourself is sleep. Far too often, moms neglect sleep in the pursuit of doing more with their time. You live off of caffeine to make it through the day and wonder how you will manage to get anything done. Take more time to sleep so your body is at its healthiest and is strong enough to face the day’s challenges upon wakening.

Take some time to get away and go out with friends. Maintaining outside relationships is important to a healthy family life. Without time with outside friends you can begin to feel trapped and alone, even while surrounded by family. Friendships can feed emotional needs that have gone unmet, helping you to regroup and pour into your family joyfully again.

Hobbies and Physical Movement Feed the Soul

Find a hobby that you enjoy. Anything from gardening to writing to dirt-biking can become an outlet that gives your mind and body a break from the stress and concerns of life. Taking time to do something you enjoy fills you up and renews your mind, preparing you to face a new day with anticipation and excitement.

Find a sport or activity you love and get active. Physical exercise is necessary for the mind and body. Exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good and help you cope with stress. Choose something fun and challenging so you will keep going back for more.

Feeling Pretty and Supporting Wellness

Make yourself feel beautiful by taking time to do something just for you, such as painting your nails, getting your hair done, taking a long spa bath, or buying a new outfit. These are all great ways to get rejuvenated, refreshed, and gain a boost in confidence.

Support your health and wellness by eliminating as many toxic chemicals in your life as possible. Choose alternatives for:

  • cleaning and hygiene care
  • skincare
  • perfumes and rooms sprays
  • the supplements you take each day

All of these go a long way toward ridding your home and life of toxins. My monthly wellness box is the best way to invest in family wellness that I have ever found. These tools equip me to support my family’s emotions and all of our body systems. PLUS I have access to ongoing education and the ability to purchase other items at a discount. No longer do I sit around wondering how I can help my children or myself. I have amazing go-to’s to not only help support our bodies when they are sick but that support them when they are well!

Why Self Care is So Important

Moms often forget to take care of themselves. You are constantly putting everyone else’s needs before your own, because that is what moms do. You love, you sacrifice, you care for others. However, when you ignore your own needs over a long period of time, it can really begin to take a toll on your mental and physical health. If you want to be the wife and mom you are meant to be, it is important that you take time for self care. Learning why self care is so important will help you to pay attention to the cues your body gives when it has had enough, and even take proactive steps before your body begins sending out SOS signals.

Why Self Care is So Important

Self-care helps keep your mental health under control. When you never get a moment to come up for air in life you are more likely to fall prey to stress and anxiety. Taking self care steps can even help support your emotions. Time alone, exercise, and participating in a hobby you enjoy are all wonderful self care activities which support your mental health.

Activities such as running, working out at the gym, and going to yoga classes all help improve your overall physical health, and they definitely fall into the ‘self care’ category. While carving out time for a workout you enjoy can be a challenge, the truth is that moving your body helps you keep up with daily life better by improving your overall fitness and health.

Promoting Confidence and Calm

Taking care of yourself can give you a boost in confidence. So often moms today get stuck in the yoga pants and messy bun habit. There is definitely space in everyone’s lives for the messy-hair-don’t-care kind of days. But when you are too busy focusing on everyone else, and you are continually running out the door hoping you don’t see someone you know, it’s time to slow down and assess your life. Taking a bit of time for self care before going out can help you feel more confident and less stressed. And you are worth it!

Don’t Perpetuate the ‘Busy’ Beast

We live in a society where busy has become a status symbol for some. Many are “too busy” to find time for themselves. Everyone gets busy, but living in a never-ending cycle of busy-ness and neglecting yourself doesn’t set the best example. This lifestyle teaches your children that being too busy to care for themselves is okay. As mom, you do not want to perpetuate the idea that self care is not important. This belief often leads women and children to become overstressed. Stress can exacerbate bouts of depression and other mental illnesses. Even the healthiest and most well-adjusted child (and mom!) can be made ill if they are always on the go and don’t attend to their own needs.

Taking care of others is often how women love. This is a good thing! But let’s be sure to take care of our own physical, spiritual, and mental needs so that we can pour out the excess on those we love. Then we will all be better off in the long run!

One way you can begin to take care of yourself now is by learning how to make the New Year your best year.  Gain tools for supporting your emotional, spiritual, and physical needs as we move into 2019, and receive lots of mom encouragement as you learn!

Supporting Emotions for Families

Families can experience some big emotions. Families with members on the autism spectrum or who have been identified as gifted, those who struggle with anxiety, or those who live with other special needs can sometimes experience even more intense emotions. Most of us (okay, all of us!) don’t have all the answers, but there are some things we can do to help. These ideas for supporting emotions for families may spark a little creativity in you to support your own family’s emotions.

Listen and Validate Emotions

Validate feelings.

No one wants to be told or made to feel that their feelings are not valid. Feelings are feelings. They are not good or bad, they just are. It is what we do with those feelings that can turn into a positive thing or a negative thing. When a family member is feeling angry, hurt, sad, depressed, joyful, excited, expressive, anxious, overwhelmed, or otherwise, let that person know that it is okay to feel.

You do not need to agree with his or her feelings in order to validate them. It honestly doesn’t matter whether you feel the same or if you don’t. Simply acknowledge the feeling. You can nod and say something along the lines of “I understand that you are (angry, sad, hurt), and it’s okay to feel that.” This goes a long way, in my experience, toward defusing a situation that may otherwise go awry.

Listen.

Should they choose to open up and talk to you, really listen to what your loved one is saying. Don’t just sit and appear to be listening but not really hearing what is being shared. If you don’t understand something you can gently ask if they can explain, or perhaps you can repeat what you think you’re hearing to them and ask if you are getting it right. Everyone wants to be heard, from the youngest to the oldest. Listening is one way to allow everyone to be heard and to help those who are hurting to process their feelings in a safe place.

Faith Plays a Part

Pray.

Do not discount prayer. Everyone who find this blog post may not be a follower of Jesus. That’s okay. I hope you can still glean something here that may help you.

However, if you are a follower of Christ, then prayer can be a crucial part of this process, as it is for many others. Asking for help through prayer can help center you and your loved ones. Simply sharing how you feel or what is happening out loud to God, can be cathartic. And even though you may not receive an answer right away, He is listening and always wants to hear from you.

Learn to Cope

Develop and teach coping skills.

It’s important to learn how to cope with your own feelings, as well as with those of your family members. Though this is a life-long learning process, it is helpful to create healthy patterns of behavior in families. Depending on the issue you’re dealing with in your home, you may need to learn a variety of coping skills.

  • Slow down and speak gently as you communicate with your child with autism.
  • Learn soothing words you can say to someone who is anxious, or simply sit with them and be a calming presence.
  • Research validating phrases you can say and make them your own to use during times of high emotion.

These are only a few ideas amongst many. Do your research to learn how you can cope with the specific issues in your own home. Don’t forget to teach your children and share with your significant other ideas for how to cope, as these skills will mean your family lives a more healthy life together overall.

How to Get Essential Oils in Your Life

Use essential oils.

There are essential oils to support every body system, including our emotions. You can use essential oils for support any time your are experiencing an intense emotion, positive or negative.

The limbic system is “a set of structures in the brain that deal with emotions and memory.” Smells can call up memories and powerful responses. Taking deep breaths while inhaling essential oils can create a wonderful, soothing combination when supporting emotions for families.

Some favorite essential oils to support emotions include:

  • Orange
  • Valor
  • White Angelica
  • Aroma Siez
  • Lavender
  • Tranquil
  • Cypress
  • Frankincense
  • Believe
  • Joy

There are others, but the above list is a great place to start.

If you’d like to try using essential oils to support your family’s emotions, you can learn more about making an investment in your wellness and determine if this is a good choice for you.

HINT: it is.
